On this day in eighteen thirty-eight, George Hinkle, the man commanding the Saints' forces at Far West, left the city with Joseph Smith for what Joseph was told was an interview, and halfway to the Missouri camp he told the general, quote, These are the prisoners I agreed to deliver up, end quote.
